Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard features
SQL Server 2022 Standard builds on the strong foundation of SQL Server 2019 while introducing significant new capabilities across performance, security, and cloud connectivity. It is designed for mid-tier business applications, data warehouses, and departmental databases that need reliability and scalability without the cost of Enterprise edition.
Key capabilities include:
- Intelligent Query Processing improvements – Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization automatically generates multiple query plans for parameterized queries, reducing execution time on complex workloads without code changes
- SQL Server Ledger – creates tamper-evident, cryptographically verified tables that provide an auditable history of all data changes, valuable for compliance and regulated industries
- Azure Synapse Link – query operational data in real time from Azure Synapse Analytics without ETL pipelines or performance impact on the production database
- Azure Arc integration – manage SQL Server instances across on-premises, multicloud, and edge environments from a single Azure control plane
- Microsoft Purview integration – apply unified data governance policies across your SQL Server estate directly from Azure Purview
- Accelerated database recovery improvements – faster database recovery times and reduced transaction log growth
- Query Store enhancements – improved query performance history, plan forcing, and new capture policies for better tuning control
- Azure SQL Managed Instance failover – built-in disaster recovery failover to Azure SQL Managed Instance via the Link feature
- Basic Always On availability groups – up to 2 replicas for high availability on Standard edition
- Failover clustering – up to 2 node failover cluster support
- In-database machine learning – run Python and R scripts within SQL Server via separately installed runtimes
- JSON enhancements – improved JSON functions for parsing, querying, and transforming JSON data
SQL Server 2022 vs SQL Server 2019 Standard
Both are solid choices for business workloads. Here is how they compare on the features most relevant to Standard edition buyers:
| Feature | SQL Server 2019 Standard | SQL Server 2022 Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Intelligent Query Processing | Yes (v1) | Yes (v2, improved) |
| SQL Ledger | No | Yes |
| Azure Synapse Link | No | Yes |
| Azure Arc support | No | Yes |
| JSON enhancements | Basic | Improved |
| Mainstream support until | February 2025 (ended) | January 2028 |
| Extended support until | February 2030 | January 2033 |
| Best for | Stable existing deployments | New deployments, hybrid cloud |
If you are starting a new SQL Server deployment or need longer mainstream support, SQL Server 2022 Standard is the better long-term investment. For existing stable environments already running SQL Server 2019 Standard, upgrading is beneficial but not urgent until the 2030 extended support deadline approaches.
Who is SQL Server 2022 Standard for
Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard is the right choice if you:
- Need a reliable, affordable relational database for business applications with a one-time payment
- Are building a new SQL Server deployment and want the longest possible support window
